Chichester Jazz Club

Phil Brown Swingtet

Phil Brown says his Swingtet’s main influence is the small swing band music of the 1950s and 1960s, principally Count Basie, Duke Ellington and Buck Clayton. However, their repertoire extends much further, with tunes from the American Songbook, music more normally associated with traditional jazz bands, and modern jazz classics by the likes of Horace Silver and Nat Adderley. The band, a regular at festivals and clubs, is happy to be playing more often in Sussex - in the second half of 2009 alone in West Chiltington and Steyning as well as Chichester.

Phil Brown – trombone / Lester Brown – trumpet /

Mark Aston - reeds / Andrew Clancy – piano / Ken Ames – guitar, vocals / Mike Bennett – double bass / David Clancy - drums

Sylvia McEwen Quintet featuring Bobby Wellins

Sylvia McEwen has become a regular on the southern jazz scene, including guest appearances at Jazz In The City festivals 2008 and 2009. Her reputation has been growing based on her success at local gigs but the acid test of her progress is the new musical company she is starting to keep these days.

Bobby Wellins, truly a major jazz figure in UK and abroad, is held in very high regard by vocalists for his work as an accompanist. Mark, Andy and Spike are in the very top rank of UK jazz musicians and work regularly with Bobby.

TJ Johnson and his Band

Following earlier successful appearances, at CJC in 2006 and JITC 2007,

TJ Johnson’s music was so popular at Chichester Jazz Club in December 2008 that many members asked for him to return for Christmas 2009. His music is impossible to pigeonhole, with influences as varied as Ray Charles, Dr John, Johnny Cash, and Frank Sinatra and his repertoire includes New Orleans jazz and rhythm and blues standards, tunes from the American Songbook, Duke Ellington, and much more. Although many numbers feature TJ’s soulful vocals there are always several excellent instrumentals from this fine band. This will be sell-out event so, come early!

TJ Johnson – vocals and piano / Adrian Cox - saxes and clarinet Jamie Lawrence – bass / Jules Fenton - drums
